IT'S THE MOST WASTEFUL TIME OF THE YEAR!

Christmas is a joyous time of year and famously known as “The most wonderful time of the year” however, it is also globally the most wasteful holiday too. This AR poster addresses the positive and negative side of the commonplace Christmas tradition of pulling Christmas crackers with your loved ones over Christmas lunch/dinner. I hope to show my viewers how wasteful and harmful this novel tradition as all the single-use plastic contents and unrecyclable packaging just end up in landfill by Boxing Day.

Globally, Christmas is the largest waste generating holiday. My aim for this campaign is to create an artwork that encourages conversations around the over consumption and immense waste that this holiday creates. In particular, my artwork focusses on the large amount of plastic and packaging waste that is generated from Christmas crackers. I was inspired to investigate the two sides of this celebration because for as long as I remember pulling Christmas crackers has always been part of my Christmas traditions. My aim for this campaign is to educate people and raise awareness about how wasteful and detrimental Christmas crackers are to the environment. Ultimately, through engagement with my AR poster I hope that people will think twice about the large amounts of unnecessary waste mass produced Christmas crackers create and hopefully they will purchase more sustainable alternatives.

I want my campaign to be used as a catalyst for viewers to realise how much plastic and packaging waste is produced as a result of Christmas festivities. I hope through this realisation will encourage viewers to have discussions around how they can reduce the amount of waste they independently contribute and/or eliminate some of this waste altogether where possible (i.e. Christmas crackers alternatives or more sustainable options).
